Speaker Bio

Our speaker for February is Steve McInturff. Steve was born in Urbana, Ohio, and was the son of a butcher. His interest in art came from his mother. She would draw simple pictures for him and he would try to draw them for her. After high school, he attended the Columbus College of Art and Design.

His professional career began with a position at Gibson Greeting Cards in Cincinnati, Ohio. At Gibson he started as a senior artist and created illustrations for various types of cards and other related paper products.

In the winter of 1979 he left Gibson to work for an advertising and illustration studio called Advance Studios. He not only did illustrations for many varied clients such as: Proctor & Gamble, Levi Strauss, Kenner Toys and General Electric, but was in charge of designing logos, corporate brochures, product campaigns, oversee printing runs, art directing photo shoots, production of materials for printing, dark room work and slide presentations. This was a fantastic learning experience and he began to find his own clients for freelance illustration.

In December of 1982 he had accumulated enough clients to venture out on his own and Steve McInturff Studio was born. His clients have been mainly in the children publishing area but he has also worked with advertising, editorial, and commercial fine art.

He began teaching art and related subjects in the fall of 1985. His first position was with Clark State as an adjunct instructing Illustration, Layout & Design and Typography.  He has taught with Urbana University for their programs at London Correctional and at the Columbus College of Art and Design.

Steve continues to work as a professional illustrator. Since 1988 he has completed 33 children picture books, 5 coloring books and 4 electronic board games. He currently lives in Springfield, Ohio with his wife Deb, daughter KRistin, two dogs, and a cat.

Steve will have digital images, prints and originals of his work and will demo drawing and color techniques, using watercolor dyes and colored pencils. The meeting should be very informative.  For more information on Steve and his work, visit his website.
